The General Orders

A Study of Discovering Faith in the Military

I remember standing sentry (or what is called fire watch in boot camp) over 20 years ago as if it were yesterday. At any moment, a drill instructor might quiz you on the orders - "Recruit Appleton. What is your 3rd General Order?" - which demanded a word-for-word response - or else.

Recruit's start learning their general orders upon arrival to boot camp. It is paramount that they can memorize and put each order into action. It has been a long time since someone asked me to quote a general order - or has it? I believe that Christ asks us to be ready to respond, scripturally, when confronted with a challenge. 1 Peter 3:15 reminds us, "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have."

During boot camp, it can be very stressful when standing sentry for the first time, or for that matter, the first ten times. The drill instructors are always yelling at you to repeat your orders - and while you attempt to remember the words, they continue to barrage you with insults.

Over the weeks of training, the 11 general orders become a natural part of a recruit's vocabulary and way of life. The recruit begins to utilize the proven principles and realize the importance of following orders. Similarly, God has provided us the scriptures, which like the general orders, are evidenced-based - meaning, if you follow them, they will work - every time.

The general orders are essential rules that guide military members throughout their military careers. They contain evidenced-based directives that include every possible scenario a sentry might encounter on duty and how to ensure their safety and that of others. All recruits need to learn these orders to perform their sentry duties without issues.

Throughout our study, we will reference the following five pertinent points about how the general orders, and biblical references, will ensure our success. The general orders (scriptures) will:

• Train you to be alert always.
• Teach you to follow orders.
• Prevent accidents and safeguard lives and property.
• Maintain order and organization.
• Guide a person's military service.

✅. 2 Timothy 3:14 "But as for you, continue in the things that you have learned and of which you are convinced [holding tightly to the truths], knowing from whom you learned them, 15 and how from childhood you have known the sacred writings (Hebrew Scriptures) which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus [surrendering your entire self to Him and having absolute confidence in His wisdom, power and goodness]. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed [given by divine inspiration] and is profitable for instruction, for conviction [of sin], for correction [of error and restoration to obedience], for training in righteousness [learning to live in conformity to God’s will, both publicly and privately—behaving honorably with personal integrity and moral courage]; 17 so that the [a]man of God may be complete and proficient, outfitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work."

A flag is considered cased when it’s furled and placed in a protective covering.

• Saluting the U.S. Flag. When you’re in uniform and an uncased flag passes by in a parade or any ceremony, you salute when the flag comes within six paces of you and hold the salute until the flag passes six paces beyond you. If in formation, follow the verbal commands of your flight or squadron commander. On the command of “Present Arms,” render a hand salute and hold it until the command “Order Arms.”

• If in civilian clothes, under similar circumstances, come to attention, remove your hat (if you’re wearing one), and place your right hand over your heart when the flag is six paces before you; hold until the flag is six paces past you. Also if in civilian clothes service members and veterans are authorized to render the military style hand salute during the raising, lowering or passing of the flag and during the playing of the national anthem
